Croatian Protour 2009

Protour – presentation of recreation disabled diving was held at the pool Utrine in Zagreb, 20 11. 2009.

Scuba diving for disabled people can be part of the rehabilitation process or, after finished rehabilitation and proper education, a recreational activity and new leisure activity for people with diverse handicaps. People with special needs accepted diving as a quality way of spending their free time. We attribute the observed positive effects during this time to hydrotherapy and regular physical activity through exercise in water and swimming, but also to social and psychological factors.

Under the water they are equal to recreational divers as they are able to move without the wheelchair, which erases the borders between people with movement disability and people without these disabilities.

Tatjana Varga (CMAS P1), Peter Majcen - LG (CMAS P2) and Damjan Peklar (CMAS P3) showed us that after more intense diving course as usually diving courses are they need only minimum assistance of able bodied; under the water they are completely independent. They took care also for Matej Lednik, who was diving for the third time.

Kristijan Vincetić, the youngest Croatian paraolimpijec, European senior record holder in swimming, also joined us. He dived for the first time. He was excited but unfortunately he couldn’t stay long because he had everyday regular training.

If Zoran Valh became the first Croatian licensed recreational diver with spinal cord injury, this year that honor belong to Tatjana Varga, the first Croatian licenced recreational diver with spinal cord injury.
